Interview with

Arkadiusz Rupiewicz

From designing systems and managing networks to overcoming daily challenges, Arkadiusz takes us behind the scenes of his dynamic role at Axians. Discover how his career evolved from IT support to system administration, the projects that shaped his journey, and why he believes Axians is the perfect place for professional growth.

Hi, thank you for meeting us. Before we get started, could you introduce yourself and tell us about what you currently do at the company? What is the name of your position and what are your responsibilities?

My name is Arkadiusz and I am an IT Systems Administrator. Contrary to popular belief, the job of an administrator is not just about system administration. It’s also about designing, creating, implementing various systems and applications, managing the network, VPN tunnels, monitoring the infrastructure…

All of this rests on the shoulders of the administrator. Then there is the on-call duty. The administrator should be the best-informed person in the company, knowing what is not working and when, in order to help users solve problems.

Can you tell us about your career? How did you get to where you are currently?

I have been working in IT since the beginning of my career. I have held various IT positions in companies with different specialisations. I started as an IT specialist in a manufacturing company, where I was responsible for system administration and the creation of an e-commerce platform to sell the company’s products. The next was in broadcasting, where I quickly moved from being an ‘IT man’ to an IT and radio technology specialist, and then to head of the technical department. In subsequent companies I was only responsible for IT administration.

What originally motivated you to work in this field?

It was a very natural step. It’s what I enjoy, it’s what I’m good at and the fact that my work is appreciated is the best motivation for me.

How did you join our company? What motivated you to start working here?
“Everyone at Axians is enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge –(and there is a wealth of it to be gained.)”

IT Systems Administrator Axians Poland

I found an advertisement on a recruitment website. After a brief analysis of the company, its activities and achievements, I sent in my CV. The response was almost immediate and it contained an invitation to interview. The next step was to compare the company’s offer with three others I had received. I chose the one I thought was the most promising – with a good atmosphere, development opportunities and a salary commensurate with the position.

What positions have you held within the company?

I started with the position of IT Support Specialist, then changed to IT Specialist and now I am an IT Systems Administrator.

How would you describe the culture here? What makes Axians unique?

In my opinion, despite the large amount of responsibility, the company supports employees in their development and encourages the implementation of new ideas and solutions. It provides training and the opportunity to choose a career path.

Many positions offer remote or hybrid working, which for some people is an additional motivator that positively impacts their performance. The relaxed atmosphere allows you to broaden your horizons among IT professionals from different specialisations.

Can you describe a typical day at the company? How does the team usually interact and work together? Is it more brainstorming and coffee breaks together or is it more asynchronous individual work in specific sprints with deadlines?

There’s always a coffee break, but it’s hard to say what a ‘typical’ day is, because every one presents us with different challenges and the way we work depends on what we have to do. One time it’s a project where the focus is on individual work, the next it’s the opposite, requiring brainstorming and teamwork.

Have you encountered any particular challenges in your career? How did you overcome them?

It’s hard to say. Every day I am faced with challenges of one kind or another, but if I had to pick just one… I guess it would be being involved in the implementation of our electronic workflow platform.

That was something new for me – designing, building and implementing the application. That was when I discovered that it was the thing I enjoyed the most. I was given proper training, the opportunity to work with an expert and the support of team members who had already worked with similar systems.

Can you share one or more stories about your successes?

One success story is certainly the aforementioned implementation and the positive reception by users of the applications I created. Another is the successful migration of mail and computers when our companies joined the VINCI Group.

What were the key moments or projects that shaped your career?

There have been many such moments, but the most recent ones that come to mind are being trained on an electronic workflow platform and being promoted to IT Systems Administrator at Axians.

What are your career goals for the future?

First and foremost, professional development, because that is what motivates me the most.

And how does the company support you in this?

It offers internal and external training to gain valuable knowledge and certificates, as well as support from colleagues and managers.

Well, one last question – what advice would you give to new employees who are just starting out with us?

Don’t be shy and don’t be afraid to ask, everyone is happy to share their knowledge and there really is a lot of it to be gained at Axians. You just have to want to broaden your horizons.

Thank you for your time and the valuable insights you have given us.
